Election Reaction

President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on promises to carry out mass deportations and severely limit immigration. Now, immigration groups in Maine are preparing for what they expect will be a rapid series of policy changes once Trump takes office. Mufalo Chitam, with the Maine Immigrants Rights Coalition, says many immigrant community members she’s spoken with are afraid of Trump’s deportation threats. She says her organization is trying to educate people on their legal rights. The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project in Portland says Trump could make sweeping changes to asylum policy at the southern border and to programs including Temporary Protected Status. Many groups say while they are strategizing about how to respond, for now they must wait to see which policies end up being put in place.

Golden Wins

Democratic Congressman Jared Golden was declared the winner of Maine’s 2nd Congressional District race last week following a ranked-choice runoff for the hotly contested seat. But the race isn’t over yet. The campaign of Republican challenger Austin Theriault requested a recount, meaning the official results likely won’t be known until mid-December. Three of Golden’s four victories have been decided by ranked-choice runoffs – a trend that illustrates why the seat consistently ranks as a top priority for both national parties.

Temporary Visas

Maine's congressional delegation is welcoming a federal decision to release additional temporary work visas. The Department of Homeland Security announced last week it would release nearly 65,000 additional H-2B visas for 2025. That's on top of the baseline 66,000 visas mandated by Congress. The Department said it released the same number of supplemental visas last year. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King said the decision will provide relief for Maine businesses struggling with a tight labor market.

Nursing Shortage

Recent efforts to boost Maine's nursing workforce have been successful, but a new report says the state will still need nearly 3,000 more nurses by 2030. The Maine Nursing Action Coalition report shows the state is graduating enough nurses to keep pace with the number that are retiring. But the state’s aging population will drive up the demand for healthcare, meaning even more nurses will be needed. The report says the state needs to be licensing an additional 500 nurses per year to keep pace.
