Trump Wins Donald Trump won a decisive victory over Kamala Harris, securing a second term in the White House after a turbulent and divisive campaign. In Maine, Trump secured a single electoral college vote from the state’s more conservative second congressional district. Maine is one of two states that splits its electoral college votes. Trump won Maine’s second district in both 2016 and 2020. Maine Election Results Maine saw high voter turnout on Tuesday, which led to long waits for final results in several key races. First district congresswoman Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, easily won re-election. She will return to Washington for a ninth term in Congress. Maine voters overwhelmingly approved a measure to limit financial contributions to political campaigns. Another ballot question to approve millions of dollars for recreational trail development also appeared headed for victory. Fake Shooter Threats On election day, several Maine high schools were targeted by so-called “swatting” incidents, according to Maine State Police. Swatting is when a hoax call is placed to police claiming to report an active shooter, even when there is no actual threat. They are designed to provoke a disruptive police response. Election officials said none of the calls disrupted voting. Hotel Moratorium The city of Portland has imposed a temporary pause on new hotel projects and expansions. The measure passed with a 6-2 vote by Portland city councilors Monday night. City councilors said the pause will give them time to review inclusionary zoning rules passed in 2019, which require that developers provide one unit of income-restricted rental housing for every 28 hotel rooms that are built in Portland, or pay fees. But hotel developers have not built any affordable units in the last five years since the inclusionary zoning rules were passed, said Portland Councilor Kate Sykes. The temporary moratorium will not apply to projects that have already submitted applications to the city's planning board. Maine Public is looking for your feedback.
