Jeanne,
If you’re a fossil fuel project looking for insurance – AIG’s got you covered.
AIG provides insurance for destructive pipelines like Line 3 and Trans Mountain, and is one of the world’s top backers of coal, oil, and gas projects. Dozens of other insurance companies have now stopped insuring coal, and sixteen companies have cut ties with tar sands projects like Trans Mountain – but AIG still has zero plans to stop backing fossil fuels.
Clearly it’s time to turn up the heat, so our friends at Public Citizen have come up with a special plan to call out AIG for being a climate laggard. Just in time for the holidays, they’re scheming a coal-themed petition delivery at AIG’s headquarters in New York City, and you can help make it as impactful as possible.
Will you sign the petition to demand that AIG drop insurance coverage of coal, tar sands, and all fossil fuel expansion? The more names behind this petition, the harder it will be for AIG to ignore.
Earlier this year, the UN Secretary General stated that 2021 must signal the end of coal, or we have no hope of meeting our global climate targets. But 2021 is almost over, and AIG insurance is one of the companies standing in the way of a coal phase out. The company is the largest coal insurer outside of China, and one of the last insurance companies to insure coal without restrictions.
At the same time, AIG is becoming increasingly isolated as a major coal insurer, as thirty five other insurance companies have already reduced or ended their support for this dirty fossil fuel. Feeling the heat, the company lost a major shareholder in June over its failure to rule out coal underwriting.
If AIG pulled support for coal, it would be a significant blow to a sector that is already facing rising premiums and difficulty in obtaining insurance. Right now, AIG is considering adopting new climate goals — so we need to send a powerful message to CEO Peter Zaffino that he must adopt a strong policy to end insurance and investments in coal and all fossil fuels.
On December 7th, our allies at Public Citizen will deliver your petition to AIG’s front desk in New York City (alongside a special sack of coal for AIG’s CEO). Add your name before the delivery and tell AIG: No more fossil fuel expansion.
I won’t lie to you. Getting the entire insurance industry off of fossil fuels is not going to be easy. But you know what? I’m not concerned.
The Stand online community and the global, Indigenous-led movement behind this campaign has proved again and again that together we are powerful beyond measure. Public pressure has already helped push thirty-five other insurers to drop or limit coal coverage, and sixteen insurers to cut ties with the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline.
All fossil fuel projects need insurance to proceed. And as more and more companies refuse to insure or invest in this industry, the faster the transition to a sustainable economy.
AIG better watch out.
In solidarity,
Sven Biggs
