November 4 Everyday People I am overwhelmed by the way democracy played out yesterday. Serving as a poll chaplain in Pennsylvania, I watched people press their way to the polls, and it reminded me how individual and communal needs intersect. It was an honor to serve. I am grateful for everyone who worked tirelessly this year to make sure people could vote safely. I am also grateful for the great cloud of witnesses who pushed us and cheered us on. Election officials and volunteers, grassroots organizers, faith organizations and faith leaders, secular pro-democracy groups and everyday people: We showed up and showed out. Now is the time to celebrate the beauty of humanity coming together to make the world a better place. Before we move on to what still needs to be done, let us celebrate what our eyes have seen and our ears have heard. The threat of this country coming one step away from authoritarian rule drew generations to the polls in ways that, I pray, will resonate for generations to come. I want to celebrate the everyday people who made all of this happen, so we can all rejoice. In our celebration, let us not forget the God of all creation, who gives us life and breath and our very being; the God who has been with us from the very beginning and who strengthens us for the hard work of co-creating a world where all people can thrive. I close with Psalm 8 as an offering of praise to the same God who set the stars in the sky. –Rev. Moya Harris, Senior Director of Programs, Sojourners Psalm 8 (NRSVUE) O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are humans that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
