Washington State high school student asks Supreme Court (SCOTUS) to block trans-inclusive athletic rules. The emergency application, filed on October 6th, argues that Washington State’s policy allowing transgender student athletes to participate in school sports according to their gender identity violates Title IX. SCOTUS ruled in June that states may ban trans athletes from competing according to their gender identity, but the Court has not ruled on whether it is permissible to allow trans-inclusive athletics policies. Federal court dismisses lawsuit against USA Fencing challenging organization’s trans athlete ban. U.S. District Judge Katharine Hayden dismissed Dinah Yukich’s lawsuit against USA Fencing on September 30th. Yukich, who is a trans woman, sought to overturn the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s ban on trans women competing in female categories, arguing the policy violates New York’s anti-discrimination laws. Judge Hayden’s dismissal stated that the court lacked jurisdiction to rule on this complaint.
Trump Administration investigates nonprofits who help people register to vote. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has investigated over 150 organizations as part of its efforts to find instances of noncitizens being registered to vote and casting ballots. Noncitizen voting in the U.S. is very rare and there is no evidence that any election has ever been swayed by noncitizens. Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward, released a statement saying that the Administration’s investigations “should concern all Americans and is further evidence of an alarming attempt by the executive branch to undermine our elections. It appears the president and his allies want to pick their voters, as opposed to the way things are supposed to function in a democracy where voters pick their leaders.”
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows decline in teens identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. The CDC’s biennial national Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) survey shows that teens, particularly younger teen girls, are less likely to self-identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual than they were a few years ago. In 2021, 30% of ninth-grade girls identified as lesbian or bisexual. In the 2025 survey, that figure declined to 17%. Researchers are unsure what may be causing this decline and Jody Herman, senior scholar at the Williams Institute, noted that “The study doesn’t provide confidence intervals to determine whether the differences [between the 2021 and 2025 surveys] are actually significant.” In the same year the YRBSS was released, the Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine (SEGM) found that a record 5.2% of college students identify as transgender.
