Agroecology Meets the Digital World in the Andes

One of the most important challenges facing the regenerative movement is reaching people who are not already part of the conversation. The Andes Agroecológicos project, led by the Institute for Rural Development in South America and the McKnight Foundation, took a new approach: bringing together 12 social media creators from Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador and connecting them directly with farmers, market vendors, and local food system leaders across all three countries.

The creators traveled through highland farms in Bolivia, markets in Ecuador, and the Mantaro Valley in Peru, sitting with farmers, learning about agrochemical residues in food, and documenting the knowledge and practice of communities already living regenerative principles. Culture change and policy change are both necessary, and this storytelling reaching millions of people through the platforms where they already spend time helps more people learn about regenerative food systems.

Regenerative Farms Lost Three Times Less Yield in France’s Droughts. Here’s Why.

A study of more than 1,200 farms across France offers some of the most concrete large-scale evidence yet that regenerative agriculture holds up when conditions get hard. Carried out by Soil Capital in partnership with KU Leuven university in Belgium, the research found that highly regenerative farms recorded an eight per cent drop in crop yields during the 2023 droughts, compared to 22 per cent on their least regenerative counterparts. The reason is straightforward: healthy soil rich in organic matter holds water. Research by France's national agricultural research institute found that soils managed regeneratively held between eight and 15 per cent more water than conventionally tilled soils, and produced higher biomass yields for the same volume of water used.

Trees Belong in the Regenerative Agriculture Story

Regenerative agriculture has become one of the defining climate conversations of our time, featured in nearly 100 events at Climate Week NYC in 2025 and the subject of 27 dedicated sessions at COP30, where Brazil launched a global initiative to restore 1.5 billion hectares of degraded agricultural land. But as the movement grows, one significant gap keeps appearing in its mainstream framing: trees. Hugh Locke, writing for Sustainable Harvest International, makes the case that agroforestry, particularly for the hundreds of millions of smallholder farmers cultivating plots of two hectares or less across the Global South, is not supplementary to regenerative practice but central to it.

Trees provide deep-rooting carbon sequestration, nitrogen fixation, erosion control, biodiversity corridors, and long-term soil structure, some of the most powerful regenerative benefits available to any farming system. Meanwhile, the reforestation and forest restoration sector has been scaling rapidly, with satellite monitoring, carbon markets, and nature-based investment funds operating largely in parallel to the regenerative agriculture movement. Locke's piece asks why these two fields, operating on the same landscapes with the same farmers and the same urgent timeline, have not been formally brought together.

Grown Without Chemicals: What African Farmers Know That Policymakers Won't Act On

Farmers across Africa have been demonstrating for decades that ecological farming methods, beneficial insects, diverse crops, nature-based pest management, can control pests and maintain yields without synthetic pesticides. A new report from the African Centre for Biodiversity documents this evidence and asks a question that deserves a direct answer: if the alternatives exist and work, why are research institutions, government policy, and regulatory bodies still built around chemical inputs?

The answer is not that the science is unclear or that farmers are resistant to change. It is that the systems surrounding agriculture, funding priorities, regulatory frameworks, and an industry that does not bear the cost of the damage it causes, have been built to maintain the status quo. The ACB report adds to a growing body of evidence that the debate about whether pesticide-free farming can work is settled. What remains is the harder work of shifting the institutions and incentives that keep degenerative practices in place. The full report is worth reading.

The Drought Is Here. These Six Forages Aren't Waiting for Rain.

The Southeast just recorded its driest September through March since 1895. Nearly 82% of Florida is in extreme or exceptional drought, and 61% of the contiguous United States is affected right now. For farmers and ranchers with grazing livestock, the question of what to feed their animals has become urgent.

This video from Regenerative Farmers of America is a practical resource. It covers six forages that keep producing when cool-season grasses have shut down — from emergency warm season plantings that go in the ground as soon as temperatures hit 65 degrees, to alfalfa whose roots reach twelve feet down to access moisture nothing else on the farm can touch, to native warm season grasses whose root systems built the fertile soils of the Great Plains over thousands of years. These are not theoretical solutions. They are what resilient farms are already doing. The pasture that gets through a drought was planned well before the drought started.

Seed Is Life: A New Documentary on Farmer Seed Sovereignty

Farmer-saved seed is the foundation of agricultural biodiversity and food systems worldwide, and it is under threat. The African Centre for Biodiversity's first feature-length documentary, Seed Is Life, tells the story of how corporate capture has eroded farmer seed rights, particularly across South Africa and Zimbabwe, while celebrating the communities that continue to safeguard this vital heritage and fight to reclaim what is theirs. The film's history is told by four women affiliated with ACB, including director Mariam Mayet, and looks honestly at the role of the state and how it could better support smallholder farming systems and agroecological approaches.

At RI, seed sovereignty has always been central to our understanding of what regenerative agriculture means in practice. The ability of farmers to save, share, and improve their own seed is inseparable from the soil health, biodiversity, and food sovereignty that regenerative systems depend on. Dr. Bronner’s Has a Plan to Change Capitalism as We Know It

Dr. Bronner's has taken a consistent stance against greenwashing. The $250 million natural soap company announced it would no longer pursue B Corp certification, arguing the standard had become a marketing tool that large multinationals could meet without meaningfully cleaning up their supply chains. A Dr. Bronner's executive also wrote critically about the Giving Pledge, questioning why the conversation focuses on how billionaires distribute their wealth rather than why economic systems allow such extreme concentration in the first place.
