A Weekly Update for NYSNA Members: January 16, 2026

Dear Friend,

NYSNA Private Sector Nurses Make History in City’s Largest Nurse Strike

On Monday, Jan. 12, NYSNA nurses made history in the largest nurse strike in New York City history. Nearly 15,000 nurses from Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside and West, Montefiore Weiler, Montefiore Moses, Montefiore Hutchinson, NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) Milstein, NYP Children's Hospital, and NYP Allen walked out beginning at 6 a.m. After months of bargaining with little movement and proposals that cut healthcare, compromise safe staffing, and disrespect nurses and their patients, nurses were forced to strike. Nurses have picketed daily and held four press conferences, joined by some of the city’s strongest elected officials and community and labor allies, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, New York Attorney General Letitia James, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, New York State AFL-CIO, Hotel & Gaming Trades Council, AFL-CIO, 1199 SEIU, the New York City Fire Department and many more. Most importantly, NYSNA siblings from other hospitals have joined nurses. In the face of hospitals’ refusal to make meaningful progress, the outpouring of support has been truly energizing. They’ve reminded us that, as Mamdani said, “In every one of our city’s darkest periods, nurses showed up for work. Their value is not negotiable.”

Media across all platforms has widely covered the strike. Some of the highlights include The New York Times, Politico, ABC, The Associated Press, The Guardian, US News, PBS , WNYC, CBS, NBC, Time, Telemundo, Univision, Al Jazeera, Crain’s, The City, AMNY, Jacobin, Forbes, Bloomberg and People.

Long Island Northwell Nurses Ratify Contracts

On Wednesday, NYSNA nurses ratified strong contracts that invest in safe patient care at Northwell/Plainview, Northwell/Huntington and Northwell/Syosset. Nurses were determined, and despite Northwell’s relentless fight against safe staffing standards that we know protect patients, nurses secured important improvements. Huntington nurses won staffing ratios for the first time ever! While there is still much to do, Long Island nurses showed that together, nurses can improve quality care on Long Island. We applaud their determination to improve Northwell hospitals for themselves and their community! Now the work of enforcing the contracts begins.

Crain’s and Newsday covered the contract ratification.

Congratulations, Northwell nurses! Together, nurses will continue to fight for what our communities deserve!

Support Nurses on Strike!

To secure the contract that nurses and patients in New York City deserve, we need all our union members to support and take action. As covered above, on Monday, Jan. 12, nearly 15,000 nurses walked out in a historic action. Management has taken all week to return to the bargaining table, but nurses will continue to fight! We need all the support we can get from NYSNA nurses and the broader community. To see ways you can support our NYSNA nurses, click here. Take a moment to send a message to greedy healthcare CEOs; donate to the NYSNA Protected Action Hardship Relief Fund (see below for more); and, most importantly, join us on the picket line!

Hands Off Our Healthcare! Ensure Our Healthcare is Not Stolen by NYP and Sinai Bosses!

NYSNA nurses at safety net facilities worked incredibly hard to win new contracts with our hospitals that protect our health benefits, improve staffing enforcement with make-whole remedies, lock in our pension, and guarantee raises equal to our NYC peers. Now greedy hospital executives at NewYork-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai are jeopardizing our win by proposing dangerous cuts to the NYSNA Benefits. This affects not just nurses in the city, but NYSNA nurses across the state – over 44,000 members at 50 different hospitals!

Call the major New York City trustees today to say no to dangerous healthcare cuts! Click on this flyer for more information and ways you can take action.

Recognizing Donors to NYSNA Hardship Relief Fund for Striking Nurses

We want to thank all our community supporters who have made donations to the NYSNA Protected Action Hardship Relief Fund. NYSNA set up the Hardship Relief Fund to give direct aid to our members who experience financial hardship due to strikes or protected actions. We’ve received over 320 donations — from $5 to much more. Doctors, our healthcare workers, union members, a writer for the New Yorker, a State Assembly representative and even a “Saturday Night Live” star. One hundred percent of all contributions will go toward direct aid for NYSNA members. We truly appreciate this very generous support.

Another Year, Nurses Voted Most Trusted Profession

Despite New York City hospitals’ vicious and unprecedented attempts to demean nurses, earlier this week, Gallup released its annual poll of the most trusted professions. Once again and for more than 20 years, Americans have rated nurses as the most honest and ethical profession. This comes as no surprise to the nurses who put everything on the line to care for patients and who are the first to speak up for their communities’ safety and care!

BUILDING POLITICAL POWER

SOLIDARITY IN ACTION

Your Rights to Advocate for Patients When Encountering ICE

Nurses’ first duty is to care for and advocate for our patients. NYSNA nurses care for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status, income or insurance status, race, religion, ability or disability, sexuality, or gender identity or expression — simply regardless. Read our statement regarding the federal policy change on immigration enforcement in “sensitive locations,” including hospitals and schools.

Our allies at the New York Immigration Coalition developed this toolkit to provide a comprehensive list of resources for community members, partners and allies who work with immigrants. The toolkit covers health, community safety, family resources, financial empowerment and more.

Learn your rights and get answers to frequently asked questions here to know what to do if you encounter ICE officers in your facility.

NYSNA has also prepared this list of legal resources related to immigration. Please review and share widely.

NNU NEWS

National Nurses United (NNU) Celebrates NIOSH Staff Reinstatement

NYSNA joins NNU in celebrating the reinstatement of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) staff who have been essential to workers’ safety across the United States. When the Trump administration made a series of disastrous cuts in early April 2025, nurses spoke up by calling members of Congress, signing petitions and writing letters. Along with other unions that rely on NIOSH guidance, we fought hard to demand these staff members’ reinstatement and ultimately succeeded!

HEALTH & SAFETY

Seasonal Flu Alert and Resources

Flu season in New York state has started with a bang. In addition to the expected A and B strains, an additional flu strain mutation (influenza A H3N2 mutated from a “J” subclade to a “K” subclade) has emerged recently. Subclade K has quickly become the dominant strain in the U.S. and a number of other countries. It is not unusual for mutations like this to happen, but because the flu vaccine must be produced many months in advance, this type of change can result in a mismatch between the seasonal flu vaccine and the currently circulating flu strains. While this means the vaccine’s effectiveness may be lower, it can still decrease the incidence of severe disease, hospitalization and death.

Read more on this year’s flu and how to best protect yourself here and use this checklist to assess your facility’s response to the surge. If you have any questions or concerns regarding flu activity and infection control in your facility, please contact the NYSNA Occupational Health and Safety Representatives at [email protected].
