Every single county in the United States is home to people living with food insecurity. Read that again. There isn’t one county nor one congressional district in our nation where food insecurity isn’t a reality for part of the population. Across Food Bank of the Rockies’ service area, one in eight people live with food insecurity, according to the most recent Feeding America Map the Meal Gap study. That’s 13.5% of people, including one in seven kids, who more often than not do not know where their next meal is coming from.
While the causes of food insecurity vary from person to person, the common thread remains: hunger affects every aspect of a person’s life, whether it’s childhood development and school work, avoiding medical issues, or just having the energy to live life fully.
One neighbor who found herself in sudden need of food assistance is Ewa, who recently visited one of our mobile pantries in the Denver metro area. Ewa was hospitalized last year and, before she knew it, her medical bill was $50,000.
“It's either pay this kind of bill, pay for food, or pay for gas. Everything just adds up,” she shared. “Coming here is like a blessing. They'll give you canned foods, they'll give you meat. It’s a blessing. Every bit helps.”
At Food Bank of the Rockies, we are unwavering in our mission to nourish anyone in our communities that is in need of food, whether it’s a one-time need or an ongoing situation. With the cost of food continuing to rise amid stagnant wages and significantly less support from the federal government, we need your help to make our mission feasible. Every dollar and hour donated means we can continue showing up for our neighbors how and when they need us most.
