A Message from Phoebe

Dear staff,

Happy Women’s History Month!

As I reflect this month on the countless women who had the vision and tenacity to imagine a more equitable world, I am honored to work at an agency that empowers women to lead in their careers and communities.

The theme of Women’s History Month this year is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” which is fitting since we are committed to creating a workplace that embraces these values. We all play an important role in creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace, shaping a better future for our youth and families, and working to eliminate bias and discrimination in our institutions.

At Children’s Aid, there is no shortage of woman doing impactful work to help our clients reach their limitless potential. More than 80% of our staff identify as women – and most of them as women of color.

There are many opportunities to experience enriching Women’s History Month events and resources in New York City this month. The New York Public Library has a recommended reading list and the Parks Department has a series of tours.

Thank you to the incredible women who make Children’s Aid the first-rate organization it is today.

Best,
Phoebe

Join Us in Albany:
#Justpay Advocacy Day on March 11

On Monday, March 11 (all day), our partners at the #JustPay Campaign will once again hold their #JustPay Advocacy Day in Albany to advocate for funding and policies to raise the wages of state-contracted nonprofit human services workers. Children’s Aid will participate and we invite you to join us!

If you are interested in attending the #JustPay Advocacy Day, please sign up by noon on Tuesday, February 27. Please check with your supervisor regarding coverage prior to signing up. You will receive updates directly from HSC and we will follow up to arrange t-shirt drop off and an advocacy day training. Free bus transportation to and from Albany will be provided by the Human Services Council (HSC). View flyer to learn more.

Last year, our #JustPay Advocacy Day was successful in getting state legislators to include the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) we demanded in their budget. Because of our advocacy, Governor Hochul also included a COLA for human services workers in the final state budget. Now, we need to ask our legislators to do that again.

If you have any questions about the #JustPay Advocacy Day or the campaign generally, please reach out to Michelle Avila at [email protected]. Thank you for your work and for your ongoing support.

Celebrate National Reading Month with
Early Childhood!

March is National Reading Month! And in Early Childhood, we love to recognize the importance of reading for all ages. Having books to enjoy at home is richness you can help provide the families in our Early Childhood program. Books build our children’s language and literacy skills. Children can talk about what they see on the pages with their family, allowing them to build their vocabulary, pique their interest in stories about characters and the world, and ground their foundation in empathy and community. This year, you can be a part of our National Reading Month celebration by purchasing a book from our Amazon Wishlist for a child in our program!

Any Children’s Aid staff who purchase a book for this campaign are invited to come read to one of our classrooms and take a photo with the class. Please fill out this survey and join us as we celebrate the wonderful world of books!
