American University Alumni Relations Events and Resources for New Eagle Families
Orientation 2023

Greetings Eagle Families!

The first six weeks of the semester are predictably challenging for many students (and their families). The excitement of new friends and a new city can contrast sharply with feelings of homesickness or initial grades. Families are adjusting as well - maybe there's one less picky eater at the table, but there's now an empty chair. We host Family Weekend as we reach this milestone together.

We hope you are looking forward to connecting with your student, whether in person during Family Weekend or in your own special ways. For families that cannot travel, encourage your student to check out our on-campus events while you make plans to join us for our live online events and recordings.

As we end these first six weeks, we are also wrapping up this Orientation Weekly and next week's edition will be our last. Whether we get to greet you in person or online - we look forward to staying connected through our Family Update newsletters and our Family Webinar Series. As always, you are welcome to reach out to us any time at [email protected].

Family Weekend: iT'S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER!

Family Weekend October 13-15, 2023

We have been adding new events and activities to our preview schedule daily. Your registration helps to inform our planning and ensures that you get all the key details for your visit (not to mention your free family perks).

lET'S REVISIT: sTUDENT HEALTH

We're entering cold and flu season and this may be the first time your student is trying to tend to their health needs without your support. Embrace the opportunity to coach your young adult to assess their symptoms and seek appropriate care. Resist the urge to do this work for them - privacy laws and policies will restrict what you can do for them. Instead, help them explore their resources, rehearse their phone calls and craft their emails. Familiarize yourself with the services, appointment opportunities and policies of our Student Health Center so you're ready when your student calls you for support. We've shared a memo with students about options for them to obtain the new Covid vaccine this fall - you'll find those details below.
