American University Alumni Relations
A Message from American Universtiy

Welcome to the AU Eagle Family!

This summer marks a big transition for your student and your entire family. While we work with your student to help introduce them to campus resources and to each other, we are also here to support you.

Orientation at AU involves online programs during the summer coupled with in-person activities when your student moves to campus this fall. We will invite you to participate in some of our programs along with your student, but we will also offer special content just for our new families. Our support for families starts with orientation - we offer webinars throughout the year designed to help re-introduce you to our resources and answer questions just when you need it.

Follow the steps below to begin your journey as a new AU Eagle Family!
We've sent your student their own steps to get started.

  1. Follow the official AU Parents Facebook page to keep up with campus news, important updates, deadline reminders and invitations to join online and in-person events. Explore our regional Facebook groups to connect with local families. Bookmark our Parents & Families website for curated calendars, quick links, Family Webinar recordings, Family Weekend details, links to our partner hotels and much more.

  2. Attend New Eagle Essentials online, our live conference-style sessions let you focus on your own priority needs. Your student will register in Engage, families and friends register here.

We will ask you to register for one of the sessions below. If these don't work for you, just let us know on the registration form. We'll work with you to ensure you get what you need this summer!

  • Tuesday, June 27, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET

  • Wednesday, July 12, noon – 3:00 p.m. ET

  • Saturday, July 22, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ET

  1. Family Webinars this summer will offer opportunities for you to meet with our campus leadership and to consider how you can spend this time helping to prepare your Eagle for success this fall.

  2. During All-American Welcome we'll help your student move-in and get ready for class. We offer a full schedule of in-person activities and traditions for your student that start the day after they move-in. We do not offer formal family programs during this time – but we will offer you opportunities to meet with office staff, bottomless coffee/tea in our designated family lounge and … a ready supply of tissues.

Orientation Leaders and professional staff are here for you all along the way.

This summer, we want your student to practice asking for help and getting comfortable with taking on the responsibilities of being a college student. We know they can do it, and our orientation leaders are ready to show them how.

Families, we know you'll want to help coach your student and you'll have lots of questions of your own! You can always reach us at [email protected]. When you email us with your questions, we're able to connect with our colleagues across campus to help you get the answers and assistance you need.

Important reminders:

  • Your Eagle's New Student Checklist is in their myAU portal with personalized content to help them stay on track with tasks and deadlines this summer. Families can find the full checklist here.

  • First Year housing details are being shared with your student directly through their AU email account. Families can always find virtual room tours, floor plans, packing lists, shipping dates and more at www.american.edu/ocl/housing.

  • Your student's move-in date and time slot will be assigned through their AU accounts around mid-June.

  • Course registration details are being sent to your student's AU email account now. Through emails, webinars, videos and live on-demand assistance, we'll have them registered right on time.

  • Student bills are still being computed as your student finalizes room selection and course registration. Bills will be updated by early July so you can meet the August 1 bill payment. Your student will also be automatically charged a fee to enroll in the AU health insurance plan. If your student has comparable coverage on a different plan, they can apply for a waiver. We will send them instructions and lots of reminders before our September deadline.

  • Family Weekend is October 13-15, 2023, and will include a mix of activities and opportunities to explore campus and the city with your Eagle. You can expect our signature events to be hosted between noon on Friday and noon on Sunday.

We'll continue to send regular emails throughout the summer. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to [email protected].

We are so excited to have you join the AU Eagle family!
