Officer James Muhlbauer

Kansas Ciy Police Department, Missouri

On February 15, 2023, Officer Jim Muhlbauer and K9 Champ were killed in a vehicle crash at 10:15 pm at the intersection of East Truman Road and Benton Boulevard in Kansas City.

A vehicle traveling at 89 miles per hour, ran a red light and crashed into Officer Mulbauer and K9 Champ while in their patrol vehicle.  The impact caused the squad car to roll over.  A pedestrian was also hit.  K9 Champ and the pedestrian died at the scene.  Officer Muhlbauer was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Master Trooper Toni Schuck

MADD Proudly Recognizes Master Trooper Toni Schuck of the Florida Highway Patrol as our Officer of the Month for April 2023. Trooper Schuck has been a member of the Florida Highway Patrol for 27 years.

On the morning of March 6, 2022, Trooper Schuck was assigned to provide traffic control and security for the Armed Forces Family Skyway 10K run. Trooper Schuck and a team of fellow troopers were responsible for protecting approximately 8,000 runners who would be crossing the northbound span of the iconic Sunshine Skyway Bridge near Tampa.

Traffic enforcement and the investigation of motor vehicle collisions are essential parts of the daily activities performed by most state, county, and local law enforcement agencies.

In 2020, there were 11,654 fatal motor vehicle crashes in which at least one driver was alcohol impaired. But when initially thinking about alcohol-impaired drivers, it is common to automatically think of those offenses as being nighttime incidents. It is true that the rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was 3.1 times higher at night than during the day; however, that does not mean there are no alcohol-impaired drivers during the daytime. Data from the Fatal Analysis and Reporting System 2020 annual report show that 10 percent of the drivers involved in fatal crashes during the period between 6 a.m. and 5:59 p.m. were alcohol impaired.
