Law Enforcement Recognition Award Ceremony 2022

Fair and Equitable Law Enforcement is our first line of defense to end drunk and drugged driving. At MADD, we support their efforts to identify and remove impaired drivers from our nation's roadways.

This fall, we were happy to honor over 200 law enforcement officers who are doing the work toward ZERO victims of impaired driving. Officers from all around the state gathered at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Midlothian, VA to receive their award and were treated to a lunch buffet courtesy of MADD.

Speakers included Lisa Black, a MADD Mid-Atlantic Advisory Board Member and survivor of a terrible crash herself; Colonel Gary Settle, the Superintendent of the Virginia State Police; Sheriff Robert “Bob” Mosier, Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security; Dana Schrad, Executive Director, Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police; and Colonel Jeffrey S. Katz, Chief of the Chesterfield County Police, President of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, and appointee to the Criminal Justice Services Board.

Thank you to these brave officers who put their lives at risk every day to help us toward a world with no deaths due to impaired driving!

MADD Volunteer Speaks to the Navy

Tammy Roy Duffy, a MADD volunteer speaker whose daughter Kaitlyn Duffy was killed in a crash in 2017, spoke with the Navy at their pre-Holiday Safety Stand Down.

“This time of the year I like to do as many volunteer speaking spots as I can, because my daughter’s birthday is in 2 weeks [December 9th]. It makes me feel better and helps me heal to reach as many people as I can to get the message out there not to drink and drive,” said Ms. Roy Duffy.

The holiday season is a notoriously dangerous time on our roadways. The Virginia DMV reports that in 2021 there were 25 fatal crashes over the holiday season (Thanksgiving - The New Year). This is 25 fatal crashes too many.

It’s especially important to be making a plan in advance before going out to holiday parties and gatherings. Designate a driver, use a rideshare app, plan to stay the night, or just don’t drink!
