Family Weekend

We look forward to seeing you at Family Weekend this weekend. We hope you’ll enjoy this opportunity to visit our campus, explore DC and create memories with your Eagle. Here are some reminders and tips to help make your experience the best it can be!                                     

Check-in Information: Check-in on Friday, October 7 is from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Mary Graydon Center, Rooms 126-128 on the first floor. Guests arriving on Saturday, October 8 should proceed directly to the President’s Welcome in Bender Arena where we will offer check-in from 9 - 11a.m.. Be sure to drop by for refreshments, schedule details, tourism guides and family freebies.

Your registration indicated your interest in the weekend’s events, but space is on a first-come first-served basis.

Schedule: You’ll find our full, searchable schedule online at www.american.edu/ocl/families/family-weekend.cfm.

Health and Safety: Some of our campus events and offices request that participants/visitors wear masks. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of the health of our community. Information about the university’s health and safety protocols for events can be found at go.american.edu/eventprotocols.

Visitors in the Residence Halls during Family Weekend: We have adjusted the residence hall guest and visitor policy for Family Weekend, beginning at 9 a.m. on 10/7 and ending at 8 p.m. on 10/9. During this time, students may host up to two (2) guests at a time. Guests will be required to check in and out as they enter and leave the building and must be escorted by the host resident at all times. Guests are not permitted to stay overnight in the residence hall at this time.

Arriving to Campus: We encourage you to consider alternative transportation methods, such as public transit, to get to campus.

  • AU is accessible by Metro bus or rail. You can explore Metro’s trip planner at wmata.com. From the Tenleytown Metro station, you can board any AU shuttle to campus. You’ll find our stop just outside the east exit of the Tenleytown Metro, at the corner of 40th and Albemarle Streets, NW. The AU shuttle is free of charge, masks are recommended.

  • If you use a ride share service or taxi, we recommend being dropped off at the Bender Arena entrance. From there you can take the elevator to floor 3 to access the Friedheim Quad and the first floor of the Mary Graydon Center.

Parking: Parking is complimentary from October 7 through October 9 with your Family Weekend registration, overnight parking is allowed.

  • You can access and download your parking permit here. If you are unable to print at home or if you misplace your permit, we will be happy to provide you with one when you check in.

  • Please park on campus in general parking spots, avoiding any reserved spots or university guest spots. You can find a printable map of campus parking locations here.

  • Parking is prohibited on all neighborhood streets while visiting any university property. In accordance with Washington, DC, regulations and the University’s “Good Neighbor Policy,” all guests, students, faculty, and staff driving to campus are required to park in a designated AU parking garage or lot.

Animals/Pets on Campus: AU does not allow pets inside campus buildings or on athletic fields (with exceptions for service animals as defined by the ADA). Your leashed pet is welcome on outdoor campus grounds.

Tobacco and Smoke Free Campus: AU is proud to be a tobacco and smoke free campus. We thank you for your cooperation.

Family Weekend Donation Drives: You can help us support The Market – AU's Pantry. The Market has become a valued resource for alleviating food insecurity among AU students. We can accept non-perishable and unexpired food items at collection sites at check-in and in The Bridge Café. AU Students Supporting Ukraine are also collecting a range of new baby/infant supplies, unopened first aid materials and non-perishable food items, please email them at [email protected] with your questions.

On-Campus Dining: Locations and hours for our many locations can be found at dineoncampus.com/au/hours.

Touring DC: Find great ways to explore the city through the official tourism site of Washington, DC. washington.org. Representatives will be on campus at check-in with area maps and fun suggestions to help you plan your visit.

Perks and Freebies for our Parents, Families and Guests:

  • The Campus Store offers a 10% discount when you sign up to receive their newsletter through their website bkstr.com/americanstore. Family Weekend hours are: Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday 10a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • Fitness Center Guest Passes are available at Family Weekend check-in for use at the Jacobs Fitness Center and the Cassell Fitness Center, October 7 – October 9. Masks are optional. Details about hours, available equipment and health and safety procedures in the fitness centers can be found through the links above.

  • Eagle Family Travel Mug and Complimentary Coffee: The first 1,500 registered guests who check-in with us receive an Eagle Family travel mug. Bring your mug to The Bridge Café for complimentary drip coffee and tea throughout Family Weekend.

  • Washingtonian Magazine: Eagle Families can receive a discount on an annual subscription to Washingtonian Magazine, the magazine Washington lives by.
