American University Alumni Relations Events and Resources for New Eagle Families
orientation 2022

Greetings Eagle Families,

We hope you enjoyed the Labor Day holiday weekend while your student explored their new nest. There is so much going on! We hosted involvement fairs last week to promote volunteer and club opportunities and there have been activities posted in Engage every day - including several outtings led by our Orientation Leaders. Encourage your student to explore Engage for more. It is entirely normal for new Eagles (and their families) to experience a range of emotions during the first weeks of the semester.

This week, we share a round-up of advice:

This is an exciting week for the New Student and Family Programs team as well - Camille Clark is joining us as our new Associate Director for Family Engagement. Camille has already spent years working as a First Year Advisor and as a staff member in our Center for Diversity and Inclusion. She brings a deep understanding of the needs of our first year students and an extensive knowledge of our campus resources to the role. Stay tuned as she helps us to set the schedule for this year's Family Webinar Series and helps you to support your student's success this year. Please join us in welcoming Camille!

From our nest to yours,
New Student and Family Programs

Family Weekend Preview Schedule

Family Weekend

We look forward to welcoming you to campus for Family Weekend 2022! We will host a range of in-person events this fall for you and your student between October 7-9. We'll also have exciting opportunities to connect online throughout the week. Whever you are this fall, we welcome you to join us!

consider tuition insurance: sept 12 deadline

Student lounging. Is Grad Guard right for you?

We all plan for our students to have a successful semester. What happens when a sudden illness, a chronic condition or mental health challenges get in the way of finishing a term? Tuition insurance can protect your financial investment so you can focus on your student. GradGuard is not related to AU, we don’t benefit from promoting their insurance. We certainly hope you’d never need it - but we strongly recommend that you consider whether it is right for your family.

sending a package?

Package room

Mail and packages are processed centrally for the university. This means that deliveries from Amazon, FedEx, UPS, etc. don't go directly to the residence halls and once they have been received on campus, we need additional time to process them and notify your student that they are ready for pick-up. You'll find more details about package restrictions and how students are able to retrieve packages on our website. Mail and packages should be addressed as follows:

First and Last Name (no nicknames)
Building Name, room number

AU SPONSORED HEALTH INSURANCE: WAIVE-OR-ENROLL by Sept 12

If your student chooses to participate in the AU sponsored health insurance plan, the charge will remain on your student's account. The next step is to actually create an account with Aetna at Academic HealthPlans. Once you have created your account, you will have access to your insurance cards within 1-2 business days. The Aetna plan covers August 1, 2022 - July 31, 2023.

If you are requesting to waive the AU sponsored health insurance and have the charge removed from your student's account, please help your student to follow the instructions online before the deadline of September 12, 2022.

Covid-19 testing, isolation and more

Covid-19 Guide

We shared details with your student via email on August 11. Please take a few moments this week to review the guide with your student now so you'll be prepared if they, or a close contact, tests positive. You'll want to pay attention to our guidance about testing, mask requirements, isolation housing, absences, guest policies and more.
