American University Alumni Relations Events and Resources for New Eagle Families
orientation 2022

This week for new families - August 29

Eagle Summit

Our newest Eagles spent their move-in week meeting their orientation groups, getting to know their roommates and new neighbors, trying dining options, and exploring DC. Our #AUWelcome continues with more activities for our new and returning students this week. Drag Bingo fills Bender Arena and Celebrate AU brings everyone out to the Quad. Involvement fairs feature clubs, student organizations and volunteer opportunities to help students preview all that is still to come. Check out our #AUWelcome wall for highlights and add your own by using #AUWelcome or #AU2026 on your social media posts.

As your student settles in to life on campus and in Washington, DC, remind them that their Orientation Leaders, RAs and AUx peer assistants are all great resources. We know you and your student will have lots of questions - just ask!

Over the coming weeks, we will be finalizing dates for our family webinar series and sharing a preview of Family Weekend activities - stay tuned!

Introducing the Center for Well-Being Programs & Psychological services

During Eagle Summit, we sat down with all of our students to talk about our new approach to student wellness at AU and the launching of the Center for Well-Being Programs and Psychological Services. The Well-Being Center, as it will be known for short, combines the functions of the Counseling Center and the Health Promotion and Advocacy Center (HPAC) into one integrated unit.

Family Weekend

Family Weekend 10.7 - 10.9

We are getting ready to release our preview schedule and open registration for Family Weekend. In the meantime, you can expect that our signature events will be offered after noon on Friday, October 7 and before noon on Sunday, October 9. We will encourage you to get to know our campus, our community and our city as you visit with your Eagle. We will offer a mix of in-person and online events so you can join wherever you are!

AU sponsored Health Insurance: WAIVE-OR-ENROLL

If your student chooses to participate in the AU sponsored health insurance plan, the charge will remain on your student's account. The next step is to actually create an account with Aetna at Academic HealthPlans. Once you have created your account, you will have access to your insurance cards within 1-2 business days. The Aetna plan covers August 1, 2022 - July 31, 2023.

If you are requesting to waive the AU sponsored health insurance and have the charge removed from your student's account, please help your student to follow the instructions online before the deadline of September 12, 2022.
