Public media is at its best…

... when it exposes you to something new or unexpected.

I had that experience this week when I heard Murray Carpenter’s story about bobolinks. I’d never heard the word, never mind as the name of a bird that lives in Maine grasslands. Then I heard their call, and it was one of those public radio moments. Give it a listen.

A profile of another potential rising political star from Maine’s Somali-American community also caught my attention this week. She's one of those candidates to watch as the political season heats up: a possible hint as to the direction of political winds.

Elsewhere across our news roundup: the largest pink diamond in 300 years comes out of an Angolan mine, Joni Mitchell’s surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, a new dictionary of African American English, and how advances in allergy treatments could make the ailment a thing of the past.

Keep reading, keep cool, and let’s hope for some rain!

AND Maine Public is very pleased to once again be a media sponsor of the Fair.

Tickets for the Fair are going on sale starting Monday, August 1. Visit the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s website – MOFGA.org  to secure your tickets to this seminal event in Maine this fall. Please plan on stopping at Maine Public's booth at the Fair where we will be sharing some of the stories and experiences from our Climate Driven series.
