Myeloma Moonshot: Ahead of Schedule

In this week’s blog, IMF Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Brian G.M. Durie talks about President Joe Biden’s recent speech about his vision of bold approaches to the Cancer Moonshot program —an initiative that Pres. Biden helped create with the goal of reducing cancer deaths by 50 percent in the next 25 years. Dr. Durie also discusses the Black Swan Research Initiative’s® own Myeloma Moonshot through its blood testing initiatives and how the Biden Moonshot ARPA-H initiative can enhance the IMF’s efforts to move forward at warp speed while ensuring equitable access to these innovative approaches in the healthcare system.

#kNOwMyeloma This Blood Cancer Awareness Month 

This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is bringing multiple myeloma to the forefront through its #kNOwMyeloma campaign, “Do You Know Myeloma?” The IMF aims to increase awareness of the second most common blood cancer in the world, while engaging with the myeloma community to inspire them to continue advocating for those impacted by the disease. Get to #kNOwMyeloma by visiting knowmyeloma.org and share myeloma facts, research breakthroughs in myeloma treatment, and inspirational stories of hope and resilience from those living with the disease.

Do You Know Myeloma? Join Dr. Mikhael on Facebook LIVE, September 21st

As part of the IMF’s initiatives for its Blood Cancer Awareness Month #kNOwMyeloma campaign, IMF Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Mikhael will be conducting a special two-part series about myeloma on Facebook LIVE this September. The first Facebook LIVE event, Do You Know Myeloma? Basics, Stats, & Facts About the Disease will be held on Wednesday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m. PT/ 7:00 p.m. ET. In this 30-minute LIVE event, Dr. Mikhael will review the basics of multiple myeloma, share facts and stats about the disease, discuss health disparities within the myeloma community, and provide educational and support resources from the IMF.

The IMF Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with Las Voces de Mieloma (Spanish/Virtual) Support Group

Virtually bringing Spanish-speaking myeloma communities together, the Las Voces de Mieloma (Spanish/Virtual) Support Group provides vital information about multiple myeloma and treatment options to patients, caregivers, and family members. Las Voces de Mieloma Support Group meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month. This month's meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 20, at 10:00 a.m. PST.  Join us by registering at lasvoces.support.myeloma.org. El grupo de apoyo Las Voces de Mieloma (español/virtual) reúne virtualmente a las comunidades de mieloma de habla hispana y brinda información vital sobre el mieloma múltiple y las opciones de tratamiento para pacientes, cuidadores y familiares. El Grupo de Apoyo Las Voces de Mieloma se reúne cada tercer martes del mes. La reunión de este mes se llevará a cabo el martes 20 de septiembre a las 10:00 a. m. PST. Living Well with Myeloma Live Webinar on September 22

The Living Well with Myeloma Webinar: Psychosocial Care|Common Support Needs and Coping Skills will be held on Thursday, September 22, at 4 p.m. PST. IMF Vice President of Support Groups Robin Tuohy will moderate a presentation by Elaine Wheat Dawson, Psy.D (City of Hope—Duarte, CA) that will focus on common emotions when dealing with myeloma; coping skills in living with myeloma; dealing with chronic pain; and communication with family, friends, and your healthcare team. 6th Annual Walkathon & BBQ to End Multiple Myeloma on September 18

The 6th Annual Walkathon & BBQ to End Multiple Myeloma will be held on Sunday, September 18, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, NY. Just like in previous years, supporters of this fundraising event will be treated to BBQ, a wine raffle, and mouthwatering home-baked goods. If you are unable to attend the event, you may also send a donation.

4th Annual Inland Empire/Virtual/In Person Walk for Myeloma Miracles 

The 4th Annual Inland Empire/Virtual/In Person Walk for Myeloma Miracles will be held on Saturday, September 24, 9:00 a.m. PST at Central Park in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. You may register as a participant or a team member, donate to a participant or a team, or purchase a Remembrance Path. Donations will also be accepted on the day of the event. Everyone is encouraged to run outdoors, walk, bike, or run on a treadmill to complete their own path for the Virtual Walk/In Person for Myeloma Miracles.
