This World Food Day, October 16, join us for a one-of-a-kind 24-hour virtual journey around the globe. The People’s Food Summit brings together farmers, researchers, activists and communities from all over the world to celebrate regenerative organic agriculture and its promise for a healthy future on this planet. Through cross-continental conversations and research showcases, the People’s Food Summit explores how soil, water, biodiversity and community resilience can be restored, one field, one farm, one network at a time, from the soil up. The program spans climate-resilient grazing in drylands, agroforestry in temperate and tropical zones, urban gardens and vast rangelands, all celebrating the small-scale producers who grow 70% of the world’s food. Created as a grassroots alternative to the UN Food Systems Summit, which has been captured by corporate agribusiness interests, the event puts community-led solutions front and center, from agroecology and permaculture to holistic grazing. by Ercilia Sahores, Regeneration International In late July, smallholder farmers from across Guanajuato gathered at Vía Orgánica for two days of hands-on work with TAPE, the FAO’s tool for measuring the health and sustainability of farming systems. It marks the first step in an 18-month collaboration between Renature and Regeneration International to train 200 farmers in agave-based agroforestry through the Billion Agave Project. The data gathered on these plots, from soil health to biodiversity to women’s empowerment, will become the baseline against which real change is measured in the seasons ahead. On the Regenerative Renegades podcast, host Matt Maier sits down with our friend Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin, founder of the Regenerative Agriculture Alliance, CEO of Tree-Range Farms, and a leading voice for food systems rooted in ecological function, community well-being, and Indigenous wisdom. Drawing on his journey from Guatemala to Minnesota, Reginaldo argues that regenerative agriculture isn’t a checklist of practices but the natural outcome of a regenerative way of being. Before we can regenerate soil, farms, or the food system, he says, we have to regenerate ourselves. "Five Kenyan counties—Murang’a, Makueni, Nakuru, West Pokot and Kiambu—have adopted agroecology policies, with five more drafting their own. But advocates say policies alone won’t cut it. Speaking at the Third Agroecology Symposium, Pelum Kenya’s Rosinah Mbeya called on county governments to back their frameworks with real budgets and farmer-focused programs, noting that smallholders face mounting pressure from climate change, rising input costs and degrading soils. The State Department for Agriculture pointed to crop diversification as a key resilience strategy, while researchers emphasised that agroecology is as much about economic viability and social equity as it is about the environment. With only a fraction of Kenya’s 7.5 million smallholder farmers currently practicing agroecology through organized networks, the message from stakeholders was clear: it’s time to put research to practice." by Roland Bunch "Pigeon peas (Cajanus cajan) and lablab beans (Dolichos lablab or Lablab purpureus), though unheard of in many parts of the world, are among the most widely consumed of all the world’s basic grains. They richly deserve this position because, if properly managed, they fertilize the soil extremely well, can easily be intercropped in the tropics with maize, and provide large amounts of highly nutritious food. But perhaps most important of all, pigeon peas and lablab beans are the two green manure/cover crops (gm/ccs) that can best overcome the ‘droughts’ that are now destroying people’s food crops every second or third year across close to one half of sub-Saharan Africa, as well as significant parts of Asia and Latin America." *Roland Bunch will be a speaker for this year’s People’s Food Summit. In Galicia, one of Spain’s most fire-ravaged regions, communities are turning to a centuries-old solution: livestock. The Cachena, the Iberian peninsula’s smallest cow, nicknamed the “goat-cow” for its ability to eat almost anything and scale rugged mountain terrain, is being reintroduced alongside goats and sheep to graze down the flammable undergrowth that fuels devastating fires. The results are promising: native livestock numbers in the region have climbed from around 1,800 in the late 1990s to more than 30,000 today, helped by government incentives and low-cost breeding programs. Fitted with GPS collars, the animals roam freely across communally managed land, keeping undergrowth in check while healing the soil.
