There are many reasons neighbors seek food support from Food Bank of the Rockies. Job changes, unexpected medical bills, or the responsibility of caring for loved ones are just a few examples. But in recent months, we have been hearing from many neighbors how the rising cost of food and persistently high gas prices are pushing their already-stretched budgets to the breaking point. For many families, these pressures are creating impossible choices between paying bills, filling the tank, or putting food on the table.

The Woman Who Refused to Look Away

Nearly 50 years ago, Kathy Groth saw a grocery store worker standing beside a dumpster, slitting loaves of bread and throwing them in a dumpster, pouring bleach over them. She was witnessing perfectly good food being destroyed on purpose. When she asked why the worker was doing that, the answer was blunt: If food was offered for free, then people wouldn’t come inside to buy it. Rather than accept that answer, Kathy talked to the store manager and convinced him to give her the extra loaves of bread so she could provide it to neighbors experiencing hunger. That was the moment Food Bank of the Rockies was born.
