We are halfway through Pride month so depending on the timing of your chapter’s Pride events and tabling, you may be slowing down and feeling less stressed, you may be ramping up your activities, or you may be feeling consistently harried all month! It may be hard to look beyond June now, but it is important to think about what comes next and how to turn a busy June into a community-engaged July, especially as we shift attention from state legislative sessions to the November midterms.

Making the Most Out of Pride Month

Pride Month is the busiest month of the year for most chapters and it’s easy to be swept up in the chaos of it all. Even through the whirlwind, it’s important for chapters to think about what comes after Pride and how to make the most out of the large audience. 

Here are some things to consider:

• Volunteering: You’re meeting lots of new-to-you people at summer tabling events and many of them may be interested in supporting your chapter; make sure to capture contact information of those interested in volunteering. After Pride, connect as a board on what projects, board positions, or general support the chapter would like to utilize volunteers for. Additionally, we have this short video and resource available to support building a member/volunteer engagement strategy. 

• Membership: Support isn’t always volunteering either. Don’t be afraid to talk to folks about your chapter’s membership benefits and why considering membership is important to the chapter’s livelihood. After Pride, consider sending out a membership ask to new email sign ups or advertise your upcoming membership drive in August or September.

• Community Organizing: Harnessing the energy of Pride can be a great way to get people engaged in the work of your PFLAG chapter. This could include educating Pride attendees about upcoming school board and city council meetings, local elections (remaining 501(c)(3) compliant of course!), and other opportunities for civic engagement, while helping connect them with meaningful ways to take action in their communities. Furthering the PFLAG mission doesn’t have to mean engaging with your chapter beyond Pride–it could mean that people start showing up and advocating for LGBTQ+ people in your community. After Pride, make sure to speak as a board and with your community partners about how to keep your community organizing energized through the rest of the year!

• Community Listening: Pride is a great time to chat with community members to understand key issues that people care about in your community. Spending some time to network with people coming to your tables or chat with tablers from other organizations is a great way to grow connections and think of new programming ideas. After Pride, connect with your board about what you heard and how your chapter may want to show up differently or connect with other organizations on these topics.

$100 Off Code for Pride Packs Expires on June 30th

We’ve re-stocked the PFLAG Chapter Leader-Only Swag Shop at chapterswag.pflag.org, where you can grab buttons, pens, shirts, stickers, fans, and Pride flags in bulk and at a larger discount than our public-facing shop; if your members and supporters want to purchase swag, please send them to shop.pflag.org. 

But here’s the BEST part: We’re giving every chapter $100 to spend on the items of your choice—but the deadline to use that credit is coming up soon, on June 30th. 

Here’s how it works: 

1. For the $100 credit, you’ll use your unique PFLAG Chapter ID as your code at checkout. This ID number is commonly used when completing your PFLAG Annual Report or on documents from PFLAG National. It can be found in the Member Portal on your chapter’s “Details” page. Not sure where to find that? We’ve made a visual walkthrough for you or you can contact your Chapter Engagement staffer for support. 

   1. Once you locate your code, connect with your fellow chapter board members, visit the shop, make your decisions about what items you’d like, then place your order using your PFLAG Chapter ID to get that $100 off. Spend it all on that order—once you use that code it will NOT be usable again, and we are NOT tracking whatever is not spent, so you’ll want to spend it all!

   2. It is very important that you enter your discount code during checkout to receive the $100 off. If you fail to use that code to place your order, we will need to work with our providers to get you a refund; however, we will deduct from that refund the charges incurred from having to re-add the code—which are 2.9% of the order total, plus $0.30. 

2. When you place ANY order, tell us in the section called “Leave a Note With Your Order” your chapter name and when your soonest event is; our team will do its best to prioritize events that are earlier.

Remember: Your PFLAG Chapter ID code for $100 off your order can be used only one time, and for one order. This means that if you spend only a portion of this $100 credit on an order, you will NOT have a remaining balance to use on a future order. Please work with your board to make ONE order to use up the full $100. 

The code expires on June 30, 2026, so if you have Pride events later in the year, please order ahead of time to take advantage of this credit. Shipping times might be slightly longer given the anticipated volume of orders, so please plan in advance as it may take anywhere from 7-20 days from placing your order to delivery date. 

The chapter leader-only swag shop is still open all year round, and items there will continue to be offered in bulk and at a lower price than in our regular store. Note: This shop is ONLY for PFLAG chapter leaders.

Think Tank Alert!

June’s Think Tank is open to all PFLAG chapter leaders, regardless of geography and community type. Whether your chapter is rural, urban, or suburban, register now for the Think Tank on Thursday June 25th at 5pm-6:30pm PT / 8pm-9:30pm to discuss turning interest from outreach into real PFLAG engagement.

Summer as a PFLAG chapter often means tabling, tabling, tabling! Pride events and other summer activities take center stage. When you table, you have folks drop by and take your materials, follow you on social media, or sign up for your email list. But then what? In June's Think Tank, we will discuss how to turn contacts into committed community-- meeting attendees, volunteers, community partners, and more.

Chapter leaders from PFLAG Norman (OK), PFLAG Seattle (WA), PFLAG Chester/Westchester County (PA), PFLAG Portland (OR), PFLAG Rome (GA), PFLAG Greensboro (NC), PFLAG Pawleys Island (SC), and more will be sharing their chapters' successes in this arena and tips and tricks on how to build PFLAG community from your tabling outreach before we move into a broader group discussion. Come prepared to learn how other chapter leaders have built a strong pipeline from casual interest to dedicated PFLAGer, as well as sharing your own chapter's success stories and asking questions!

Regional Director Openings and Voting

We have three regions (Gulf, Pacific Northwest, and Mountain West) with openings and four regions (Mid-Atlantic, Southern, South Atlantic, and Mid-Pacific) with Regional Directors up for re-election. 

RDs are cheerleaders, a resource, a sounding board, a wise friend, and a connector of chapters across their region and to PFLAG National and its staff. In this role, you'll have the pleasure of getting to know engaged, dynamic PFLAG leaders, assisting with new and creative endeavors in the chapters, and lending your expertise when challenges arise. You'll also be able to apply all the lessons you have learned through your own PFLAG leadership to ensure that our chapters remain a strong and vibrant force for change.

Resilience Roundup

This Friday, we honor Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Many communities around the country host celebrations, and many chapters have been participating in the past several years since Juneteenth became a Federal holiday. Juneteenth provides a great opportunity to connect with other organizations and begin forming relationships in your community. Consider taking some time this Friday to learn more about what’s going on for Juneteenth locally.
