Kansas - Transgender men sue the state over law banning transgender people from bathrooms, invalidates driver’s licenses. Two transgender men from Lawrence are suing the state in hopes of invalidating SB 244, which invalidates driver’s licenses and segregates restrooms by sex assigned at birth. The men are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and the Ballard Spahr law firm. The suit argues that SB violates constitutional rights to personal autonomy, privacy, equity, due process and freedom of expression.
Lyft offering discounted rides to transgender Kansans whose driver’s licenses have been invalidated by SB 244. The rideshare company shared on social media that they would be offering a 50% discount code to help transgender Kansans get around for the week.
Maryland - State Commission on LGBTQIA+ Affairs releases report with recommendations for supporting LGBTQ+ students. The 16 page report outlines eight recommendations for Maryland schools, including requiring educator trainings about the specific needs of LGBTQ+ students and developing and passing a uniform statewide anti-discrimination policy for schools to adopt. Missouri - House votes to adopt permanent anti-trans athlete ban. The House voted 98-37 on February 26th to remove the sunset provision from the state’s current anti-trans athlete ban, which would expire in 2027. The new bill would make the ban permanent. House Committee considers anti-trans bathroom ban bills. The House Emerging Affairs Committee held a hearing on March 2nd to debate anti-trans bathroom ban proposals. One of the bills discussed during the hearing would require all public buildings to segregate restrooms, changing rooms, and sleeping facilities by sex assigned at birth.
Virginia - General Assembly considers restoring HIV funding cut last year. The Department of Health cut $20 million – two-thirds of the total funds – from the Ryan White Part B Program, which provides medical services, public education, and essential services around HIV/AIDS. HB 30 and SB 30, which both passed in their respective chambers of origin, would partially restore these funds.
