Neighborhoods have been on my mind of late. Last week, the annual Palaver Gathering and its community conversation centered around this idea. Belonging, curiosity, food, fellowship, tradition and ritual were words I heard spoken that night. Those words also sounded waves of resonance as we’ve prepared this issue of Encore for you — they’re all at the heart of what follows. In this issue, two contrasting musical explorations. One with Maine origins about Shaker music (timely, given the recent release of the film, The Testament of Anne Lee) and another about a fascinating Venezuelan icon, who performed in Portland more than 130 years ago. Two hosts offer up their hot GRAMMY picks, and (cuteness alert) we have a call out to all pet-parent listeners! (Psst, there’s a prize giveaway courtesy of Portland’s Fish & Bone!) Last but certainly not least, there’s exciting news of our newly refreshed Maine Public Classical weekly schedule, starting January 26! Rest assured, all of the hosts you can’t live without are still here! We’ve added a few new shows to our weekends and have introduced fresh show titles and new in-show music features for our locally hosted programming. Quite simply, there’s more to love! Thank you to Palaver Strings for its community leadership and magical convenings like The Gathering, which helped get our juices flowing for this issue.
Enjoying what you read? Tell your music-loving friends and family to sign up, too! As always, all welcome. ❤ ~ Heather McDougall, Manager, Maine Public Classical |
