Our Global Regeneration Revolution

The term regenerative agriculture is now being widely used, to the point that in some cases it can be seen as greenwashing and as a buzz word used by industrial agricultural systems to increase profits.

Those of us who formed Regeneration International were very aware of the way the large agribusiness corporations hijacked the term sustainable to the point is was meaningless. We were also aware of how they are trying to hijack the term of agroecology, especially through the United Nations systems and in some parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America where a little biodiversity is sprinkled as greenwash over agricultural systems that still use toxic synthetic pesticides and water soluble chemical fertilizers.

Similarly we have been concerned about the way organic agriculture standards and systems have been hijacked by industrial agribusiness.

There are also corporations that are rebranding their herbicide sprayed GMO no-till systems as regenerative.

These corporations and systems must be called out as degenerative.

Do we want to sustain the current status quo or do we want to improve and rejuvenate it? Simply being sustainable is not enough. Regeneration, by definition, improves systems.

RI’s response to The Ecologist

In a recent article published by The Ecologist titled “The Regenerative Ranching Racket”, author Spencer Roberts engages in deliberate fraud and makes false claims in order to try to discredit regenerative ranching, the fastest growing agricultural movement in the world.

He conducted outright fraud and lied when registering a false farm on our Farm Map and deliberately misrepresented the purpose of our Farm Map. This map is a free service that connects thousands of farmers around the world to hundreds of thousands of potential customers. It is a self-regulating service not a certification system.

RI International Director Andre Leu, wrote The Ecologist Editor Brendan Montague a response letter and, even though they sent back a generic answer, they have now pulled the article off their site.

Dishonest articles like this are not only disturbing to the organizations and individuals named, but to the whole movement. We have a big enough struggle trying to change global frameworks in agriculture. We cannot afford to have intentional undermining of the energy and work of so many people with great integrity and passion who have been working hard to build the movement to where it is now.

If you’d like to read The Ecologist false claims about regenerative agriculture (we were able to retrieve the article despite being deleted) and RI’s response to that continue reading:

Sri Lanka to go 100% Organic

The President of Sri Lanka gave a Presidential Directive on May 10, 2021 to form a “Presidential Task Force for the creation of a Green Sri Lanka with sustainable Solutions for Climate Change”. This Task Force has the aim to transform Sri Lanka’s farming using 100% organic fertilizer and pesticide systems as well as being a world leader in regenerating biodiversity to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

2 days later on May 12, CropLife Sri Lanka, the peak industry body for the global pesticide industry sent a submission claiming that yields of crops, particularly rice will fall without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

Thilak Kariyawasam, President of the Lanka Organic Agricultural Movement (LOAM) contacted IFOAM Asia, myself and other leaders in the international organic sector about this. Several organizations including LOAM, the Global Alliance for Organic Districts (GAOD), The Asian Local Government Organic Association (ALGOA), the Intercontinental Network of Organic Farmers Organizations (INOFO) and Regeneration International had a Zoom conference, organized by IFOAM Asia where we agreed on a range of strategies including holding an international Webinar in support of Sri Lanka on June 9. Jennifer Chang, the ED of IFOAM Asia also organized a letter writing campaign in support of Sri Lanka.

RI sent an extensive submission to the Presidential Task Force showing why the CropLife submission was using false information to undermine the President’s Directive. The RI submission contains many references as to why pesticides are unsafe and why Regenerative and Organic systems based on the science of Agroecology give higher yields and are more resilient to climate change than industrial agriculture.

The submission is available to read here.

Are Corporate Claims of Regenerative Agriculture Real?

Regenerative agriculture could save the world. But like so many good ideas, corporate marketing teams are already coopting regenerative agriculture into a meaningless buzzword. What is regenerative agriculture really? And how can you as a consumer separate the green from the greenwashed?

Regenerative Farming Is Vital to Ensure Food Security

The past year has shown us the importance of health as the world battles the Covid-19 pandemic. But, it is crucial to also not forget the health of our planet which is in crisis caused by climate change and the collapse of biodiversity as a result of exploitation of our natural resources.

Kacie Scherler was a vegetarian on-and-off for 10 years, but when she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, the only diet that could heal her required her to eat animal meat — and she had to raise it herself. Scherler realized that caring for the climate and for human health are inextricably linked.

Regeneration International is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to building a global network of farmers, scientists, businesses, activists, educators, journalists, policymakers and consumers who will promote and put into practice regenerative agriculture and land-use practices that: provide abundant, nutritious food; revitalize local economies; regenerate soil fertility and water-retention capacity; nurture biodiversity; and restore climate stability by reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions while at the same time drawing down excess atmospheric carbon and sequestering it in the soil.
