Victory trudges through the barren streets of a ghost town in Ukraine, desperate for help. Painfully thin, the dog can barely keep moving, and her hair is coming out in clumps. She finds a dirty mattress in a forgotten building and collapses. It has been months since villagers—in a mad dash to escape falling bombs—left her behind.

She’s exhausted, but sleep escapes her as her raw skin burns. Spider-like mites bore into her pores, and the red mange leaves her in agony. She’s at the end of her rope.

A PETA-supported team found her while checking for animals in the abandoned village—risking their lives under the threat of missile strikes.

Since the war’s earliest days, PETA-supported teams have been on the ground, braving bombs to help animals. The robust network of rescue workers, volunteers, and activists saves animals, delivers food, provides spay/neuter surgeries, and maintains safe spaces and clinics.

So far, teams have delivered 3.3 million pounds of food for hungry dogs, cats, horses, and other animals, but so many are still waiting for help.

In a country where once-bustling cities have become shells of their former selves and many shops are closed, delivering food is a major challenge. The relief operations to transport that amount of food are vast and complex. And the need is immense: Just one of PETA Germany’s partners relies on a delivery of more than 40,000 pounds of food each month.
