To Mondelēz International:
As one of the biggest snack producers and buyers of forest-risk commodities in the world, Mondelēz has a major responsibility to protect humanity’s remaining rainforests, global climate and to respect human rights.
Nonetheless, numerous investigations have found ties between Mondelēz and suppliers who wreak havoc on endangered ecosystems, including the Leuser Ecosystem in Indonesia and the Amazon.
Rainforest Action Network’s latest assessment of 17 major brands and banks finds that Mondelēz continues to shirk responsibility for deforestation and human rights abuses in its supply chains, earning a failing grade.
Mondelēz must do better — we demand that you take the following, immediate actions:
1. Adopt “No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation” (NDPE) policies for all forest-risk sectors and make improvements to existing policies so as to require compliance at a corporate group level, and make the adoption of cross-commodity NDPE policies at a corporate group level a mandatory requirement for all suppliers;
2. Establish robust due diligence and verification mechanisms to ensure suppliers fully respect all human rights, particularly workers’ rights, the rights of Indigenous peoples and the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), as articulated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and prohibit all sourcing from companies that abuse human rights;
3. The publication of a stand-alone Human Rights Defender policy that enacts zero tolerance procedures within supply chains to prevent violence, criminalization, intimidation, and killing of human rights, land, and environmental defenders;
4. Investigate and disclose the footprint of your supply chains on global forests, Indigenous peoples, and frontline communities
