American University Alumni Relations Events and Resources for New Eagle Families
orientation 2022

Greetings Eagle Families,

It was so wonderful to see so many on campus for Family Weekend! For those of you who weren't able to travel, we can tell you that your students are having fun and taking in all that Washington, DC has to offer. They're also figuring out that college academics are challenging in different ways. Midterm exams are predictably stressful, but they also offer important signals to your student about how they may need to adapt in the weeks ahead. Encourage your student to take advantage of faculty office hours, teaching assistants, supplemental instruction, our writing center and other academic support services. Encourage them to use their Fall Break day off (October 14) to rest, catch up and plan ahead. Join us for our upcoming webinar, "Navigating Academics" on October 19 to learn more about the resources we offer to help your student along their academic journey.

This is our last Orientation Weekly for our families. Your Eagles are flying now, and we thank you for your engagement during this transition. We look forward to staying connected through our Family Update newsletters and our Family Webinar Series. As always, you are welcome to reach out to us any time at [email protected].

From our nest to yours,
New Student and Family Programs

you've been asking

Q: How do students prepare for spring registration?
A: Registration dates and times were assigned to students on 10/5 and are now available in your student's spring 2023 student planner in Eagle Service. Your student can also review the requirements for their major and any AU CORE requirements in Eagle Service and they'll cover registration planning in their AUx class. First Year Advisors will soon be emailing students to set appointments to review spring registration plans.

Q: We are trying to make travel plans for winter break. Help!
A: Final exams are 12/12 - 12/18, but your student might not have an exam every day and they may finish early. Students are expected to move out of the halls 24 hours after their last exam or by noon on 12/18. They do not need to move their belongings between semesters.

Halls re-open 1/12 for the spring semester, your student will get their slot assigned later this semester. The first day of classes is 1/17. We always recommend that you consult your student about their assignments and commitments before making any non-refundable travel plans.

If you are not sure where to direct your question, you can always reach out to us at [email protected] or explore our collection of quick links to help families find answers to frequently asked questions.
