This week on The Ten....

... There’s an excellent field of stories to highlight, starting with a monthslong investigation by Maine Public reporter Charlie Eichacker. Charlie spent weeks poring though data to better understand why truckloads of out-of-state waste are being deposited in a state-owned landfill that was supposed to only handle refuse from Maine. Read about it below. The story, edited with assistance from WBUR, touches on a measure currently moving through the Legislature trying to close a loophole that has allowed this process to happen.

I also enjoyed a piece from member station WUFT in Gainesville about a journey to explore Black marching band culture in a central Florida town. The story explores what was gained and lost when changes were made decades ago, and how it’s trying to come back. Another that captured my attention was an interview with the first Black architect to win the coveted Pritzker Prize.

We’ll wrap with a Massachusetts whaling ship found in the Gulf of Mexico, the soul of Ukraine, and jokes that have endured for thousands of years.

Till next time,

Mark

Environmental activists, neighbors of the landfill including the Penobscot Nation and a growing group of lawmakers have decried the unique set of circumstances that allow private companies to dump so much material from Massachusetts into the state facility, despite laws that were once meant to prevent that.
