Dear Jeanne,

Right now in Wet’suwet’en territories, Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and Indigenous land defenders are resisting round-the-clock police harassment and surveillance. The militarized police are acting on behalf of a privately-owned pipeline, Coastal GasLink, a fracked gas pipeline heavily backed by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC).

And while our allies at Gidimt’en Checkpoint are preparing for RCMP invasion and brutality, RBC is preparing for one of its biggest corporate schmooze events of the year, the PGA Canada Open golf tournament in Toronto.

We refuse to let RBC continue business as usual. Will you send an email to RBC’s senior executives demanding that they defund CGL and stop funding the land theft of Indigenous peoples?

SEND A MESSAGE

RBC is the key financier of CGL and Canada’s worst fossil fuel bank. Can you imagine the arrogance it takes to be funding the removal and harassment of Wet’suwet’en people on their land AND be sponsoring the Canada Open at the same time?

With help from RBC’s loans and investment, Coastal GasLink is bulldozing through unceded Wet’suwet’en territory to build its fracked gas pipeline. The pipeline is nowhere near finished, but a major – and risky – engineering project is about to start. Coastal GasLink is preparing to drill under the sacred and still drinkable river, the Wedzin Kwa.

We’re mobilizing to bring the drilling to RBC at the golf tournament and hold them accountable for their violation of Indigenous rights. Will you email RBC CEO, Dave McKay, and demand RBC defund CGL?

Look, I'm going to be honest with you, Jeanne. Forcing RBC to defund Coastal GasLink at this critical venture isn’t going to be easy. But at Stand.earth, we fight to make the impossible possible. And we have successfully gone up against banks, corporations, governments, and lobbyists to stand with communities protecting their homes and lands. We have shifted billions of dollars from fossil fuel projects and secured landmark commitments from banks and pension funds to stop financing fossil fuels.

The momentum to stand with the Wet’suwet’en and resist Coastal GasLink is stronger than ever. Together, we can force financial institutions like RBC to stop profiting off Indigenous land theft and climate destruction.

Thank you for being in this fight with us.

With hope,

Batul Gulamhusein
