PORTLAND (WGME) – Congress appears to be making moves after a restrictive new abortion law went into effect in Texas.
The law bans abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy when a so-called "fetal heartbeat" is detected.
In response, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced last week that the House will vote to codify Roe v. Wade, basically making a woman's right to choose federal law across the land.
Senator Susan Collins says a similar effort is happening in the Senate, and she's in favor.
“I talked with some of my colleagues who are working on legislation in the Senate which would codify Roe v. Wade and I would support such legislation," Collins said.
Senator Angus King, who was with her at an event in Brunswick, added this is something that needs to be addressed by Congress.
